Types Of Liver Transplant

Sometimes a healthy person is willing to donate a part of his/her liver for a particularpatient (mostly a family member). This type of transplant is called as living donor liver transplant. All donated livers and living donors are tested before transplant surgery. Prior to the surgery few tests are done that help in determine and ensure the donor’s liver matches your blood type, and is of the right size, so that its matched with the patient’s body and works absolutely normal.

 

Liver Transplant Procedure

Liver transplant Surgery is a medical procedure that is performed in specialized liver transplant centers. During a liver transplant surgery procedure, the surgeon removes the unhealthy liver and replaces it with a new healthy liver. The sick liver is removed through anincision made in the abdomen region. The liver’s blood supplying veins and arteriesincluding the biliary system is connected to the new liver after placing it into the abdominal cavity.

 

What Happens After The Liver Transplant Procedure?

After a liver transplant surgery, the patient is shifted to ICU (intensive care unit), and monitored very closely. The patient is connected to several other medical equipments and is continuously on a machine calledrespirator that breathes for the patient pumping oxygen to the lungs. The tubes and respirator are removed once the patient starts breathing himself. Once the patient is awake he needs to undergo various test includingX-ray, ECGs and blood tests during his/her hospital stay. In some cases Blood transfusions may be required. The patient leaves the ICU once he/she is able to breathe well, and has a nor malblood pressure, body temperature, and heart rate, which could be about 3-4 days after he is out of the ICU and needs to stay in the hospital for few weeks before he goes home.

Common Complications After A Liver Transplant Surgery

  • Acute rejection – Mostly happens while you are still in the hospital, however it can also happen when you are at home or anytime anywhere. Need not worry, rejections can be treated with medications. In this situation the patient may require a liver biopsy.
  • Reappearance of liver disease - The diseases which damaged your healthy liver may come back effecting the new liver. These diseases damage the new liver a little or completely. In cases like these, although the disease can be treated, but some times may require a second transplant surgery.
  • CancerUsually people after any organ transplant surgery may be at risk of skin cancer. These cancer may spread quickly as compared to people without organ transplants. Due to this the patient may require to undergo certain cancer related tests and medications.
  • Liver Transplant patients are prone to get infections, high cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure, bone thinning and obese.

Medical Follow-up after a Liver Transplant Surgery

Lifelong medical follow-up is needed for patients who had Liver Transplant Surgery. You will be required to visit your transplant center regularly and be in touch with your surgeon. Post-transplant, patient will be on some medications that include Immuno suppression drugs which will keep the body from fighting off the new organ.  You may be given other medicines to control blood pressure, antibiotics and antivirals, diabetes, diuretics, and necessary minerals and vitamins.
